Holi in Fiji | The Festival of Colors around the World

March 21, 2019

The Green Lion

Holi, the festival of colors is celebrated in all the Indian schools in Fiji. About 3 generations ago, when the first bonded laborers from India were brought to Fiji, they celebrated all Hindu festivals with great joy and fervor. Soon the festivals and rituals were celebrated with the fellow Fijians, young and old alike.

On the day of Holi, the children in the schools, come in the traditional attire and perform dance and songs. The teachers distribute sweets and snacks to all. Later, the children, staff and our volunteers all gather in the playground and play with different colors, spreading them on clothes, face and hands. The more they try to run away, the faster they run to smear them with colors. No one is spared !!

At the end of the day, everyone goes back home looking colorful head to toe. The next day it is declared as a holiday when the children can offer Holi prayers with their family members.
