Working with Disabled Children | Encouragement, Stimulation and a Lot of Fun

“Experiences From Heather Moore”

It’s impossible to imagine just what you will experience and learn the first time you work with disadvantaged disabled children in a foreign country. I expected it would be eye opening, and it was, but I did not expect a warm cheerful welcome every morning and to discover each child’s personality as they opened up within just the first couple of days.

Participating at the daycare center for disabled children is a wonderful mix of fun and challenges. I sought to encourage them to be as independent as possible in a fun, dynamic way- this took some problem solving in the beginning as it did not always go smoothly using only nonverbal communication. Discovering what works for each child and influencing them to utilize their abilities with a smile on their face brings a very unique feeling. Seeing how the children seek to help each other and those working at the center brings a nice sense of community. Without the extra hands, the daycare could not run as efficiently and the children would not receive as much attention. With the extra hands, each day is full of encouragement, stimulation, and a lot of fun.
