Malawi, known as the "Warm Heart of Africa," offers an unforgettable blend of natural beauty, vibrant culture, and heartfelt community connection.

During your first week, you'll dive deep into Malawian life - learning the Chewa language, exploring bustling markets, visiting national parks, and engaging in hands-on cultural workshops like traditional cooking and bracelet making.

In weeks two and three, you’ll choose from impactful volunteer projects in Mangochi: supporting kindergartens, assisting in schools, or contributing to vital environmental conservation efforts. From creative activities and health education to reforestation and community workshops, you'll make a real difference while forging lifelong memories.

Week 1 – Cultural Heartbeat & Natural Wonders

Day 1: Arrival in Mangochi
Arrive at the airport, meet your local team, settle into your accommodation, and enjoy a welcome dinner and orientation.

Day 2: Local Markets & River Visit
Tour Mangochi’s colorful local market, meet vendors, and visit a nearby river for scenic views and relaxation.

Day 3: Historical and Cultural Village Tour
Explore Mangochi’s museum and monuments in the morning. In the afternoon, visit a cultural village to engage with traditional activities and performances.

Day 4: Lake Malawi National Park & Cooking Class
Discover Lake Malawi National Park, relax on the beach or swim, then learn to prepare Malawian dishes during a hands-on cooking class.

Day 5: Liwonde National Park Safari
Experience a wildlife adventure in Liwonde National Park, enjoy a picnic lunch, and return for a relaxed dinner.

Day 6: Handicrafts & Fisheries
Create traditional bracelets in a handicraft workshop, visit a local fishery, and join a meeting to learn about ongoing community projects.

Day 7: Reflection & Preparation
Reflect on your cultural week, finalize your chosen volunteer placement, and prepare for your community engagement journey.

Weeks 2 & 3 – Volunteering & Community Impact

During these two weeks, you’ll engage in a mix of hands-on volunteering, planning activities, and connecting deeply with the local community. Expect daily tasks like classroom support, environmental work, or organizing health and hygiene sessions, depending on your chosen project.

Choose from these volunteer options:

  • Kindergarten Teaching: Assist local teachers with lessons and themed activities, create educational toys, and help with health and hygiene workshops.

  • Teaching Assistant: Support teachers in subjects like English, Math, Science, and History, lead creative workshops, and encourage student confidence and growth.

  • Environmental Conservation: Work on tree planting, establish community nurseries, lead recycling workshops, and promote sustainable living practices.

 

Departure

The Saturday of your final week
Depart from Mangochi, taking with you unforgettable memories and meaningful connections with Malawi’s people and landscapes.

What’s Included

  • Accommodation from Sunday until Saturday noon of the last week

  • Pick-up upon arrival during the regular pick-up time and transportation as per the scheduled activities

  • Daily meals — 3 meals on weekdays and 2 meals on weekends

Mangochi is a laid-back lakeside town known for its stunning natural beauty, warm hospitality, and vibrant local markets. You’ll explore Lake Malawi National Park, famous for its clear waters and incredible biodiversity, and Liwonde National Park, home to elephants, hippos, and rich birdlife. The region’s colorful cultural villages, bustling fish markets, and historical monuments make it an authentic and captivating destination.

Accommodation

Accommodation is in shared rooms at a volunteer guesthouse in Mangochi, offering a comfortable and social atmosphere with basic facilities. You’ll enjoy local Malawian meals prepared fresh daily, providing a true taste of the region’s flavors. Expect a welcoming communal vibe where you can connect with fellow volunteers and locals.

Standard Requirements

  • Minimum age: 18

  • Maximum age: 65

  • Minimum English level: Basic conversational

  • CRB required: On signup

  • Passport copy: Required on signup

  • Resume copy: Not required

  • Required qualification: None

Other Requirements

  • Participants above 60 must provide medical clearance confirming fitness for travel and volunteer activities.

  • Participants under 18 require signed parental consent; adult accompaniment is strongly recommended.

  • A reasonable level of fitness is needed as activities include outdoor work under the sun.

  • Yellow fever vaccination and a valid certificate are mandatory for entry into Malawi.

Good to Know

  • Recommended vaccinations include diphtheria, Hepatitis B, meningococcal meningitis, rabies, typhoid, and cholera (depending on risk).

  • Respect local customs and dress codes — modest clothing covering shoulders and knees is required.

  • Participants are not permitted to rent or drive motorbikes or other vehicles during the program.

  • Prepare for occasional limited Wi-Fi and basic amenities.

  • An open mind, flexibility, and a sense of adventure will enrich your experience.

  • Bring environmentally friendly toiletries and reef-safe sunscreen to reduce your environmental impact.
