Whether you’re planning a summer break, a gap year adventure, or a purposeful group trip — The Green Lion has programs built around what matters to you.

Who can travel with The Green Lion?

Our programs are open to a wide range of travellers — whether you’re 18 and heading out on your first solo trip, a 20-something looking to make a difference during your uni or career break, or travelling with a group of friends, classmates, or teammates.

Most programs are designed for travellers aged 18 and over, though some destinations accept 16–17-year-olds with written parental consent or when accompanied by a guardian aged 18+. We welcome individuals from all backgrounds, nationalities, and levels of travel experience. In most cases, no special skills are required, just curiosity, respect, and a willingness to get involved. Some of our programs require education or qualification requires – especially our Medical volunteering; these details will always be outlined on our program descriptions.

You’ll join a small international group of like-minded people, often from the UK, Europe, Canada, the United States and beyond — perfect for building global friendships and shared memories. Many participants travel solo, but we also regularly host friends, siblings, couples, school groups, and university cohorts on custom and open programs.

Whether you’re looking for a solo gap year adventure, a meaningful summer trip, or an organised group experience, there’s a spot for you here.

Can I travel solo with The Green Lion?

Yes — absolutely! In fact, most of our participants travel solo, especially young women who are looking for a safe, supported, and social way to explore the world. Whether you’re taking a gap year, a summer break, or just booking a trip on your own for the first time, you’ll be in great company.

When you join one of our programs, you’ll be matched with a small group of fellow travellers from around the globe, many of whom are also travelling solo. From day one, our local teams and fellow participants create a welcoming, friendly vibe that makes it easy to settle in and start building new friendships.

We also provide airport pickup, orientation, and 24/7 local support, so you’ll never feel alone — even if you start your journey that way. It’s the perfect balance of independence and community.

If you’re wondering whether solo travel is right for you, our programs are a great place to start.

What kind of accommodation will I stay in?

Accommodation varies slightly depending on your program, but you can expect clean, comfortable, and social spaces designed for young travellers. Most of our participants stay in shared houses, local guesthouses, or volunteer centres with other travellers on the same program — it’s part of what makes the experience so memorable.

You’ll usually share a room with 2–6 people (same gender where possible), and facilities are basic but safe, with access to bathrooms, communal areas, and Wi-Fi in most locations. In some locations, we offer upgraded and private accommodation options at an additional cost; let the team know if this is something you’re interested in.

In every destination, we prioritise security, cleanliness and community feel. Each program page gives more detail on what to expect, so check it out before you go.

Will someone pick me up from the airport?

Yes — airport pickup is included for all programs when you arrive on the scheduled start date. One of our local team members will be there to greet you at the airport, holding a sign and ready to welcome you to the country. From there, we’ll take you straight to your accommodation and help you settle in.

We know that arriving in a new country for the first time can be overwhelming, so we make sure the arrival experience is smooth, safe and stress-free.

Your airport transfer details will be confirmed with you in advance, and you’ll also receive WhatsApp contact info for our local coordinator, so you have someone to message if your flight is delayed or you have any questions while travelling.

What support will I have during my program?

You’ll have round-the-clock support from your local coordinators throughout your entire experience. From the moment you arrive at the airport to your final day in-country, we’re here to guide you, answer questions, and make sure you feel safe, supported, and included.

Our programs are run by experienced local coordinators and staff who live in the community and know the area inside and out. They’ll lead your orientation, manage daily logistics, and be your go-to people for everything. Whether it’s navigating the local area, helping with a personal concern, or just recommending the best weekend adventure.

We also offer 24/7 emergency support, and you’ll receive contact details for your on-the-ground coordinator via WhatsApp before you arrive.

Whether you’re travelling solo, joining a group, or setting out for the first time, we’re right there with you — every step of the way.

Do I need a visa or travel insurance?

Yes — for most of our destinations, you’ll need both a tourist visa and valid travel insurance before you arrive.

Visa requirements depend on your nationality and the country you’re travelling to, but in most cases, it’s a simple online application or visa on arrival. Once you’ve chosen your destination, we’ll help guide you on what’s needed and where to apply.

Travel insurance is mandatory for all participants. Your policy must cover medical care, trip delays, and unexpected emergencies — including coverage for any activities included in your program. We’ll ask you to submit your insurance details before you travel.

If you’re unsure what to get, we’re happy to point you in the right direction. Just reach out!

Can you accommodate dietary requirements?

Yes — in most destinations, we can accommodate common dietary requirements such as vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or no pork/no beef, as long as you let us know in advance during the booking process.

Meals are usually prepared by local cooks and reflect the traditional food of the region, so options may vary depending on the country. While we do our best to meet your needs, please keep in mind that some destinations may have more limited access to specialty ingredients.

We recommend bringing a few of your favourite snacks or supplements if you have specific dietary needs or preferences, especially if you’re travelling to more remote locations.

The earlier you let us know, the better we can plan to support you on the ground. Your health, comfort, and enjoyment are all part of the experience.
