Galungan and Kuningan Ceremony is one of the longest holidays in Bali. Schools are closed, as teachers and students are taking part in the ceremonies at home. They will be spending quality time with their families and making offerings at the temples. Though it is a holiday for them, for us it is one of the busiest times at The Green Lion Bali. It is time for us to start making bigger changes to the schools while the students are away.

BEFORE

The Special Renovation Camps we have done in the previous years have proven to be highly beneficial to the teachers and students This year too, in order to make the best use of this holiday time, we started renovating the old school buildings of two schools located in the outskirts of Ubud. Our project started with repairing school facilities such as broken chairs, tables, bookshelves and other essential facilities. Our participants divided into groups and took the responsibilities of their work accordingly.

Then, we moved on to repainting the classroom walls and extended to the school buildings. Participants brought in their creative ideas to make the walls bright with different colours and drawings. This part of the activities requires a lot of physical labour and patience as well. Our participants faced a couple of challenges while doing this project. It is not always easy to work together with people coming from different countries, cultures and backgrounds. But they get through it and enjoy their time spent together while doing something worthwhile for the children.

It was a long two weeks and we completed the work. Their hard work has finally paid off with amazing results. This is one of the best gifts we could have ever given to these village kids. And their smiles when they first saw the school after the holiday, said all about it.

AFTER

True happiness is when we realize that we made a difference in someone else’s life who absolutely deserves it. Small acts of kindness lead to amazing results and we hope that our efforts will help them to create brighter futures. These are the reasons why we keep doing what we do in our own way.
