My love for teaching is only matched by my love of traveling, and Fiji did not disappoint!

The Green Lion

Experience of Katie MacMillan from the USA

From the first step off the plane in Fiji, I was surprised by how different things were from what I imagined. And now, nearly 10 weeks later at the end of my program time, I still feel the same way. Coming from America, the Fijian people and culture were so different from my day to day life; with their warm welcomes and relaxed lifestyle, it did not take me long to feel at home. The activities during our orientation week were great, from seeing the market in Suva to exploring Mosquito Island and the Colo I Suva Waterfall park. It was a great way to adjust to “Fiji Time” while getting a feel for the area. The coordinators and team at Green Lion along with all the participants I have met in my time here have become my Fiji family. It has been so nice knowing there is always someone to chat with, go to the cinema, or go on a weekend adventure with; and that there is always someone in the office to ask for help or guidance whether its with placement questions or suggestions for where to go on the weekend.

My project, teaching in a local Kindy, was an incredible experience. I don’t think there was a better possible way to use my skills as a teacher to become so connected to the Nakasi Hart community. My teachers were very welcoming, and let me jump right into teaching the students in the class. There is nothing like a “Good morning Teacher Kate,” from 15 smiling kindy kids every day!

This was also a great learning experience for me as an American teacher, to see and learn about the differences in education in a different part of the world. I was constantly impressed by how welcoming and warm every member of the school community was from my first day at the school; something that I am not accustomed to. I was even able to participate and give a speech at the Kindy graduation ceremony, which was a great honor. I also had the pleasure of working at the “Kids Club” program during the students’ school break. While I still planned activities and lessons to do with the group, the feel was much more relaxed since it was more of a summer camp. I really enjoyed this experience too, since I was able to work with 13 to 16 year old students which is closer to the age range that I usually teach.

My love for teaching is only matched by my love of traveling, and Fiji did not disappoint! With the weekends to ourselves, and some long weekends for public holidays I was able to travel to so many different parts of Fiji. As a Scuba Diver, I was lucky enough to swim with Manta Rays, do a Bull Shark dive, and see endless amounts of beautiful corals and creatures. Even out of the water the places I visited, like Savusavu, Kadavu, Taveuni (to name a few) seemed unreal in their beauty. I’m still in awe of the untouched nature that there is in so many parts of Fiji, as well as how distinct the islands are from each other. I have done my fair share of travelling in the 10 weeks I have been in Fiji, and still, feel that there is more to explore.

When I arrived in Fiji a little over 2 months ago I was not expecting to feel such a connection to the people of the community, and to the country itself. Everywhere I have traveled I have felt so welcomed and at home. I never would have believed that I would meet such amazing people through this experience, and know that I will remember them and Fiji forever.

Vinaka vakalevu!!
