The Green Lion

The Experiences by Catarina Salvado

I’ve decided to participate a week in the Eco-building project in the Shaullo community, in Cajamarca, Peru.
It was the best decision I have ever taken. It was short in time, and it passed so fast.

This is a very special and small community, in the middle of nowhere, no easy access, with just a few people and a bit forgotten by most.

I’ve started with so little expectations, and I received so much. Here we can see how our problems get so small and how our contribution can be so big (specially to myself to grow as a person).

I was very lucky, people were very kind to me, and Sr. Florencio taught me the basics to help him building his house for his 8 members family. The house he was building was made with clay and stones, as the majority of the houses in the area. I began helping him with the construction of the kitchen. What amazed me the most, was that everybody helped, his wife, his mother, his brother… They were all committed.

Sr. Florencio was patient with me and showed me a lot of techniques. We finished his kitchen’s walls and we started with other different technique to build a bathroom.

I also had the opportunity to meet other participants in the house where I’ve stayed and met the children from the community.

At the end of this week, Sr. Florencio invited us to have dinner on his new kitchen with his family. The whole family cooked for us amazing empanadas and tamales (typical food). It was great!

I am very thankful that I could be there and meet these kind and hardworking people. I wish them the best, and if I have the opportunity to come back, I will definitely do it!
