The Green Lion
I have been in Laos, contributing to the “Community Construction” program, for seven weeks. I still have six more weeks but, so far, it’s one of the most amazing experiences of my life!
The accommodation is a very beautiful and peaceful place. Located on both sides of a pond in which we can go swimming and fishing, it’s a place to relax, to meditate but also to spend good times with other participants and locals.
In the Green Lion staff, there are Micky, Ticky, Kham and Shawn. They have been and still are incredible since my arrival. Spending good times, talking about Lao culture, helping in our program, having fun… They are always there for us. Moreover, because of COVID-19, I’m the only participant left but they don’t let me alone and welcome me like a family member! Thank you so much guys!
The current mission in my program is the construction of the Sengsay school wall in order to make it a safer place. Thanks to this experience, I have learned a bunch of new skills! Indeed, I have to build the wall with very common tools and therefore I needed new tricks to have a beautiful straight wall. But no worries, you have two famous professionals, Ticky and Kham, with you all the time. Moreover, even if it can be hard work especially because of the heat, the work atmosphere is really great. You won’t notice the passage of time!
I spent unforgettable time with other participants chatting around a famous Beerlao, playing cards but also travelling around the country. We went to Vientiane, the capital, where we visited wonderful temples, walked across the morning and night market… We also went to Vangvieng where we had really fun times hiking, tubing, visiting caving, chilling in blue lagoon!
Unfortunately, today it’s harder to travel around the country but Micky, Ticky and Kham are making sure to help me have a great time. It wasn’t what I expected, but thanks to this situation I’m in full immersion in Lao life and I’m learning so much more about the Lao culture.
