Celebrating International Day of the Girl Child
We are blessed to be in a country where the importance of protecting and educating the girl has been taken as an initiative by the Government under a special scheme in 2015. The initiative is called Beti Bachao, Beti Padao (save the daughter, educate the daughter)
Our projects and centres in India speak volumes of our conjoined efforts in this regard. We encourage more and more women to work with us and we have designed our projects to provide equal opportunities and a supportive environment for women and their families. Each year we celebrate the International Day of the Girl Child on 11th October in India.
Here is what we did this year at The Green Lion Rajasthan Centre.
It is observed in Rajasthani society that there is inequality in certain areas such as access to education, nutrition, legal rights, medical care. Women face discrimination in families and there are cases of domestic violence and forced child marriages as well. In celebration of the day, we joined with the all-girls school where we conduct our teaching programs.
Activities during the event included team games where the students of the girlsβ school played football and volleyball along with our participants and staff. Awareness sessions were conducted where our international participants narrated a brief history of the importance of the day and made posters with slogans with the students. During Roleplay/skit, each of the students was asked to share their thoughts and dreams of what they want to become. The day ended with a relaxation session with yoga. Tea and snacks were shared by all.
The Green Lion Goa Centre also celebrated the day in a unique manner.
The participants invited the mothers of all the children who attend the school run by The Green Lion. They gave them a warm welcome with showers of flower petals and cheering. The room was decorated with colourful balloons and ribbons to make it more special for kids and adults alike.
The Green Lion participants drew posters and wrote slogans based for creating awareness along with the kids and women who joined the event. The result of this effort was a brilliant display of emotions which portrayed the energy of the youngsters.
A documentary about the importance of the girl child around the world was shown to them in the room. Everyone enjoyed high tea which marked the end of this wonderful day.
Later in the evening, we continued the celebration at the Migrant Outreach settlement where the families warmly welcomed our participants. They shared moments of laughter while discussing different topics such as laws, rights and responsibilities and increasing awareness with posters made earlier the same day.
We also had a special cake as a final gesture of awesomeness to be a girl! It was an emotional and memorable day for them as well as for us. We believe in empowering women in our society and try to give the importance and attention they deserve every single day. We celebrated this year’s Day of the Girls with girls and women who actually deserve our kindness and support. And the gratitude and warmth they felt were obvious on their bright faces.
