The opportunity to work at Benh Vien Thong Nhat Hospital

The Green Lion
Over the past 3 weeks we have had the opportunity to work at Benh Vien Thong Nhat Hospital guided by The Green Lion Team, especially Jack and Peter. The Medical program has allowed us to work in various departments in the hospital including Anaesthesia, Emergency,
Neurology and Trauma and Orthopaedics from which we have had the opportunity to observe minor and major procedures, the structure and routine of the medical staff, the way in which medicine is practiced in comparison to our own country and the day to day running of the 1000 bed hospital. We are grateful to The Green Lion team for accompanying us each day to and from the hospital as well as acting as mentors, translators and friends throughout our experience in Ho Chi Minh City.
My favourite part of the program was assisting nurses and meeting patients, the Vietnamese people are so beautiful and gentle and we thoroughly enjoyed spending time with them. We were also trusted to perform vitals on patients in the Emergency and Neurology departments, this was great. We were also able to see surgeries and assist and observe in the emergency department, which we couldnβt do at home, so this was super special and exciting for us!
The only criticism I have is of the hospital, their lack of communication meant that sometimes, doctors and nurses we unavailable or they had nothing for us to see or do. This is in no way The Green Lions fault and we do understand that hospitals get quiet and people were busy, it is just that a few times it seemed to be because of poor organisation from the hospital. Although, the hospital staff were lovely, they were enthusiastic and willing to help us learn.
The accommodation and food were great, we were welcomed and looked after so well during our stay and everyone went to great lengths to
make sure we were comfortable.
We have had an incredible time and cannot thank The Green Lion more for their hospitality, generosity, kindness and support. This has truly been a once in a lifetime trip and we will not forget our time here. I truly believe that it is the people with whom we worked and The Green Lion team that made our program so wonderful, without them we wouldnβt have learnt as much, or enjoyed our time more. They are a
team of wonderful, friendly and kind people and we will miss them!
