The Green Lion

Dashain is known as the biggest and the longest festival in Nepal which is celebrated by the Hindus. Dashain festival lasts for 15 days starting from Ghatasthapana and ending with Kojagrat Purnima. Important dates and their names are as below,

  • Day 1 – Ghatasthapana
  • Day 7 – Saptami
  • Day 8 – Maha Ashtami
  • Day 9 – Maha Nawami
  • Day 10 – Vijaya Dasham
  • Day 15 – Kojagrat Purnima

The tenth day is considered the most important day and it is called Dashain. The story behind this festival says that a demon named Mahisasur who spread evil was fought and killed by the Goddess Durga. And Dashain celebrates the victory of Goodness over Evil.

Dashain is celebrated all over Nepal by all the Hindus. It is the time of the year when they make special food, decorate their houses. One another important habit of the Nepalese during this festive season is flying kites. The kites represent to carry a message to the heavens not to send rain anymore. Other popular games and activities of the people include playing cards and swings.

How we celebrated Dashain at The Green Lion Center

On the occasion of Dashain this year, The Green Lion Nepal celebrated Dashain with our participants in Kathmandu. All the participants were excited as they prepared to experience this Nepalese festival alongside the locals.

On the Maha Astami/ Nawami, we arranged a cultural night where the participants danced to the Dashain songs with our team members. Everyone enjoyed delicious Nepali food for all which were served in the Nepali way. In the early morning of the day of Bijaya Dashami, participants took showers and were ready with wearing clean clothes. Seniors gave Tika, Jamanara (Yello Plant) and Dakshina (money) with the blessing to the young people as blessings.

With 15 days’ celebrations, this year’s Dashain festival ended with lots of memories at our Green Lion Center in Nepal.

Happy Bijaya Dashami
