Every year around the middle of April, which happens to be the hottest month of the year, the wonder that is the Songkran festival kicks off. This public holiday provides an opportunity for Thai people to go home to be with their families and to enjoy the time together through the preparation of good food, the sharing of positive wishes, and the engagement in good fun.
Lucky for us, Thaiβs happily share the experience of their traditional celebration of the new year with people who come from all over the world to join in the celebration. This giant water fight is symbolic of the cultural ritual of using water to wash away the negative energy and wrongdoings of the past and marks the passage on to a clean start for the new year.
This observance may take the form of some people gently pouring water onto you, or water guns and sprinklers being used, it may even be a truck loaded with people in the back who are throwing buckets of water as they pass by. If you do it right, Songkran is a very unique and drenching cultural experience to immerse yourself in when visiting Thailand.
